How to convert an avi and other formats to a dvd so I can convert back to iso?

Does someone out there know of a program that will do this for me so I don't have to go on a wild goose chase. I want to eventually have all my movies in iso form and backed up on my external hard drive. So someone please tell me about a program and how to go about it!
